I I I I -t i i -f; By DAVE BICKHAM E-G Sports Writer WEST RUSHVILLE How guickly a young team can mature Lwill be the key to Fairfield Union's football season this fall. With only 10 returning letter-'jnen and five returning starters, the Falcons will have their work cut out for them if they want to repeat last season's 8-2 record. 'We're so much smaller than we usually are," head coach Greg Rosser said. "We've only got about two kids over 200 pounds. We've also got very low team depth and very little experience." While the Falcons aren't blessed with the size they've had in the past, they do have more quickness this year.

"We're quicker than a year ago," Rosser pointed out. "We don't have anybody that's real fast, but overall we're quicker." Offensively, the Falcons will try to do a lot of different things. I "We're going to try to mix it up," Rosser said. We're not going to be big enough to constantly 'We've got to get off to a good start. We need to play well our first game and we need to win our first to get ready for he league.

We can't get off to a bad start. 'I'm really excited jabout the season. We Tost a lot of players last season's eam, but we've got a of good, young kids ith a lot of Greg Rosser over people, and we've got a inew quarterback, so we're going to a lot of play action stuff and bootlegs and misdirections." Leading the offense will be senior quarterback Jim Nelson (5-foot-8, 170 pounds). Joining liim in the backfield will be fullback Jason Minnard (5-10, 165) tailback Ted Engle (5-9, 170). Handling the blocking duties will be junior center Adam Roby (5-8, 160).

Flanking him at guards will be sophom*ore Jeff Clark (5-8, FAIRFIELD UNION quarter- back Jim Nelson (45) throws a pass during pre-season football practice. A pair of seniors will take up the tackle slots with Brant Noland (6-1, 190) and Ray Woodside (6-5, 225) handling the duties.

When Nelson puts the ball in the air, he'll be looking for tight end Chad Canter (6-0, 190, Sr.) or senior split end Brad Bosch (5-8, 140). Defensively, the Falcons will be led by Woodside at end. According to Rosser, Woodside will be starting for his third year and will be looking to repeat his First Team All-League performance of a year ago. Joining him on the line will be Noland at end, while junior David Riggs (5-8, 165) and senior Richard Peters (5-8, 185) will be at the tackle spots. In the defensive backfield, senior Jamie Newell (5-9, 170) will play cornerback, while senior Jeremy Winegardner (5-10, 170) will be at halfback. The safeties will be Bosch at free safety and Engle at strong safety. According to Rosser, the key to the entire season will be getting off to a good start. "We've got to get off to a good start," he said. We need to play well our first game and we need to win our first couple to get ready for the league.

We can't get off to a bad start." While it may be easy to look at this season as a rebuilding year, Rosser isn't taking that outlook. "I'm really excited about the season. We lost a lot of players from last season's team, but we've got a lot of good, young kids with a lot of enthusiasm," he noted. Because of the low number of players on the team (27) and the few returning lettermen, the Falcons are not expected to repeat last year's season as league champion. However, Rosser doesn't this is accurate.
