Steve Bannon reports to prison for contempt of Congress sentence
Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon surrendered on Monday to law enforcement to begin his four-month prison sentence for contempt of Congress. The Supreme Court had on Friday denied Bannon's request to remain out of prison during the appeals process after he filed an emergency appeal on Friday with the high court. Bannon was sentenced to four months in October 2022 after he was found guilty of defying a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

Hurricane Beryl slams Carriacou Island as a major Category 4 storm
Hurricane Beryl regained its Category 4 status as it slammed into Carriacou Island with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. Beryl made landfall in Carriacou at 11:10 a.m. ET as an "extremely dangerous" storm, according to the National Hurricane Center. The cyclone hit Carriacou with maximum winds that were just 5 mph short of Category 5 status, the most powerful hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.

The Supreme Court on Monday handed down a historic decision on whether a former president is shielded from criminal liability for "official acts" taken while in the White House. The Supreme Court rejected former President Donald Trump's sweeping claim of "absolute" immunity from criminal prosecution for "unofficial acts" but granted some protections for former presidents for official acts taken while in the White House. Trump aimed to secure such immunity to try to quash the federal election subversion prosecution brought by special counsel Jack Smith.

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected Donald Trump's sweeping claim of "absolute" immunity from criminal prosecution in his federal election subversion case, but said former presidents are entitled to some protections for "official" acts. The 6-3 opinion was delivered by Chief Justice John Roberts. The ruling will affect whether Trump faces a federal trial this year on four felony counts brought by special counsel Jack Smith, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S. and obstruction of an official proceeding, for his attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden.

The Paris Olympics stage is set for Team USA after another marquee sport secured its final rosters for men's and women's gymnastics. The top American gymnasts vied for 10 total coveted spots on Team USA at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials over the weekend, with veterans and first-time Olympic athletes alike one step closer to competing for gold at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. After two-days of ultra high-stakes competition that saw multiple unexpected injuries dashing the dreams of some favorites, the women’s Olympic team will include four veterans with Simone Biles, Sunisa "Suni" Lee, Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey, leading the way for 16-year-old Hezly Rivera who will make her Olympic debut in Paris.

Simone Biles has made history countless times, not only for the number of titles she’s won but also the moves she’s been the first to perform in competitions. Biles showed off her history-making moves in the 2024 U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Trials, where she earned a spot to represent the U.S. women’s gymnastics team at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, which will kick off with the Opening Ceremony on July 26. Biles now has five signature moves named after her in three different events: on the floor, on vault, and on the balance beam.

4th of July mass shootings increased over the past 3 years, group says
Mass shootings are becoming more frequent during a holiday typically known for fireworks and barbecues, according to a nonprofit that tracks shootings. There were 80 total mass shootings over the past three years between July 1-7, said Mark Bryant, the executive director of the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a nonprofit which tracks shootings in the United States. The GVA defines a "mass shooting" as a shooting that kills or injures four or more people not including the shooter.

North Korea tests 2 missiles, 1 reportedly may have fallen on land
"We strongly condemn North Korea's missile launch as a clear provocation that seriously threatens peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The tests were detected at 5:05 a.m. and 5:15 a.m., the South Korean military said.

At least 30 people are dead and more than 100 were left injured after multiple suicide bombings were carried out at various locations in Nigeria over the weekend, sources said Sunday. The first attack on Saturday was carried out by a woman, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, the Emir of Gwoza, told journalists. "The first suicide attack was masterminded by an unidentified woman who sneaked with two children into a wedding reception of a popular young man in Gwoza; she detonated her Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), killing herself and many people," the Emir said.

DOJ to present Boeing with plea deal that families of 2018, 2019 crash victims say falls short: Lawyers
The Department of Justice is preparing to present the Boeing Company a plea deal that would again allow the aerospace giant to avoid a trial over an alleged conspiracy to defraud the United States, according to attorneys for families of victims of two fatal Boeing 737 Max crashes who were briefed on the department's plans Sunday afternoon. Under the proposed deal, Boeing would be required to enter a guilty plea to the conspiracy charge, which was first filed January 2021, for allegedly misleading the FAA during its evaluation of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft. The company must also agree to the appointment of an external corporate monitor, pay a fine of about $200 million and remain on probation for three years, according to lawyers for the families.

Several US military bases in Europe put on heightened state of alert, US officials say
Several U.S. military bases across Europe are now operating under a heightened state of alert, ABC News has confirmed. The alert level of Force Protection Condition (FPCON) "Charlie" was put in place over the weekend, according to two U.S. officials. According to the U.S. Army, Charlie is the second highest state of alert that "applies when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating some form of terrorist action or targeting against personnel or facilities is likely."

State attorney general probing police shooting of teen who allegedly wielded replica gun
New York State Attorney General Letitia James said her office is launching an investigation into the fatal police shooting of a 13-year-old boy who allegedly pointed a replica handgun at officers during an encounter in Utica. James's announcement came a day after hundreds of people attended a community vigil for 13-year-old Nyah Mway, who was killed Friday night. Citing New York state executive law, James said the Office of Special Investigation, which is part of her office, assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer "may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission."
