Kihei is generally known to be a friendly and laid-back beach town. While it's generally considered safe, especially compared to larger cities, it's always a good idea to take standard precautions when walking alone at night, such as avoiding unlit areas or being mindful of your belongings.

According to tourism statistics, the typical length of stay on Maui is about eight days (pre-covid), the most of any Hawaiian Island. While you can certainly explore the island faster than that, a week would set a proper pace.

Hawaii's sunset seems early due to its proximity to the equator, where day length varies less throughout the year. Also, Hawaii doesn't observe Daylight Saving Time, unlike most of the U.S. Therefore, when other states "spring forward", Hawaii's sunset appears even earlier in comparison.

In Hawaii, sunset typically falls around 6:00 PM in the winter and 7:00 PM in the summer, so golden hour will occur just before that. However, don't expect a full sixty-minute show. Golden hour rarely lasts longer than thirty minutes.

The best place to view a Maui sunrise is Haleakala Summit. Some of the very first visitors to Maui, including Mark Twain in 1866, ventured to the summit for sunrise. Today the winding 38 mile Crater Road sees hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Conventionally speaking, sunrise and sunset are defined as the moment when the top of the Sun's disk is on the horizon. If we lived on an airless body, we could calculate when this moment happens with simple geometry and call it a day. But light doesn't travel from our star to our eye in a straight line.
