Easy Proper Lifting Techniques for Safety (2)

Introduction

Every day, workers across various industries lift and carry heavy objects as part of their routine tasks, whether in warehouses, offices, or construction sites. While it may seem like a simple job, improper lifting can cause serious injuries such as strains, sprains, and even severe muscle and joint problems. Staying safe and avoiding injuries relies on knowing the right way to lift objects. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 36 percent of workplace injuries are due to improper lifting, leading to shoulder and back problems mainly caused by overexertion and repetitive strain.

Stretch Before Lifting Heavy Objects

Make stretching a regular part of your day, particularly before lifting heavy objects. Stretching warms up your muscles, making them more flexible and less likely to tear or strain. Additionally, it improves blood circulation, which is important for muscle repair and recovery, helping you stay physically healthy and perform tasks effectively.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Lifting

  • Lifting With a Rounded Back: Lifting with a rounded back is a common mistake that can be dangerous. It means bending your back instead of keeping it straight. This puts a lot of pressure on your lower back, which can lead to muscle strain or even more severe injuries. To lift safely, always keep your back straight and use your leg muscles.
  • Ignoring The Weight Limit: Every object and lifting equipment comes with a weight limit for safety. Ignoring or overloading these limits can cause equipment to fail and result in injuries. Always check the weight limit before lifting and follow it closely. If needed, use extra resources or equipment to ensure safety.
  • Rushing The Lifting Process: Rushing while lifting can lead to mistakes and unsafe lifting techniques, raising the risk of injury. Take your time to check the load, position yourself properly, and lift carefully. Spending a few extra seconds can help avoid workplace injuries.

Key Steps for Safe Lifting

1. Bend Your Knees, Not Your Back:

When lifting, remember to protect your back by keeping your spine straight. Bend your knees instead of bending over from your waist. This utilizes your leg muscles, which are better at handling heavy loads than your back muscles.

2. Keep The Load Close to Your Body:

To stay balanced and steady while lifting, keep the object close to your body. When the load is near your center of gravity, it puts less pressure on your back. Avoid stretching your arms outward when carrying heavy objects, as it raises the chances of injury.

3. Use Proper Lifting Equipment When Necessary:

If an object is too heavy or has an awkward shape, don’t try to lift it by yourself, Use equipment like a forklift, hand truck, or conveyor belt. These tools help you lift safely and prevent incidents.

4. Avoid Twisting Your Body While Lifting:

Prioritize your back safety when lifting heavy loads by avoiding twisting your body. Keep your hips and shoulders in a straight line, and turn by moving your feet to change direction. This technique helps distribute the weight evenly and reduces pressure on your back.

5. Check Your Pathway:
  • Check that the pathway is clear before lifting.
  • Watch out for any tripping hazards while lifting.
  • Beware of slippery areas to avoid accidents.
6. Ask For Help When Needed:

If you come across a load that's too heavy for you to lift alone, don't hesitate to ask for help. Lifting together not only reduces strain for each person but also makes it safer by evenly distributing the weight.

Conclusion

Workplace injuries from lifting are too common, emphasizing the need for safe lifting practices. By applying proper lifting techniques and avoiding mistakes in daily routines, accidents can be reduced. It’s advisable to utilize proper equipment for heavy items to prevent severe injuries. These measures not only lower the risks of any loss but also increase productivity in the workplace.
